Housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900, the Musee d’Orsay has the largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world. On our tours, we like to explore not just the works but also the famous and sometimes infamous personalities behind the art, the style and the politics of the time.
Each tour starts with an exploration of the building itself as the former train station — masterpiece in and of itself designed to revere the technological innovations of the time. Then we’ll explore an introduction to impressionism and its early works. We’ll move through the museum looking at the evolution of the movements, how the art and the artists changed them. W will examine the seminal pieces of the period. We’ll also get some insight into the gossip and scandals of the time period and the artistic community.
The tour will explore topics that shaped the art world for then and today, such as a rejection of the traditional salons, the rise of the female artist being accepted into the community, and how the art of the day reflected the fast-changing evolution of society, technique and modernization.
Our tours are prepared by and conducted by artists and art lovers just like you. If there is a section/style/artist that you want to explore please let us know so we would love to tailor your visit to what inspires you!
